How to block TikTok on iPhone so it actually stays blocked
One video, then it's midnight. TikTok is built to beat a timer, so a timer is not enough. Here are the three ways to block it on an iPhone, and what each one costs to get around.
The short version
There are three ways to block TikTok on an iPhone. They all use the same Apple mechanism underneath. They differ in one thing: what it costs you to get back in at 11pm.
| Way | How you set it | The way back in | Holds for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Screen Time | Settings, App Limits | A button called Ignore Limit, or a passcode you know | A few days |
| A blocker app | Pick TikTok, set a schedule | A PIN, a timer, or switching strict mode off | A few weeks |
| Tollie | Pick TikTok, hide the key in another room | Walk to a spot in your home and scan it, or walk 100 steps | As long as you want |
Tollie closes TikTok. The key is a spot in your home. One booth free forever · No account · iPhone
Get TollieOption 1: Screen Time, the built-in way
Free, already on your phone, and worth knowing, because every other blocker builds on it.
- Open Settings, then Screen Time.
- Tap App Limits, then Add Limit.
- Choose Entertainment, then tick TikTok. Tap Next.
- Set the daily time, switch on Block at End of Limit, tap Add.
- Optional: under Downtime, schedule hours when only the apps you allow are available.
Here is what happens when the limit hits. The screen says Time Limit, and under it, a button: Ignore Limit. One more minute, remind me in 15 minutes, ignore for today. If you set a Screen Time passcode, the button asks for the passcode first. You know the passcode. That is the whole problem, and our guide to why you keep ignoring Screen Time limits goes through it. The one trick that works for some people is having a partner set the passcode and not tell you.
Option 2: a blocker app
Opal, Freedom, AppBlock, one sec, ScreenZen and the rest all run on the same Screen Time framework, so they shield TikTok exactly the way Apple does. What they add is a different key: a PIN, a waiting period, a breathing exercise, a timer you commit to, a "strict mode" switch. Each is better than Ignore Limit. Each is still on the phone, in your hand, at 11pm. Our ranking of nine blockers sorts them by exactly that.
Option 3: put the key in another room
TikTok's whole design is to make the next swipe cheaper than stopping. The fix is to make it cost something real. Tollie shields TikTok with the same Apple mechanism as the options above, but the key is a spot in another room: a ten-minute pass costs getting up and walking there. Setup takes about four minutes:
- Install Tollie and pick TikTok. Tap New toll booth and choose TikTok. If YouTube Shorts and Reels pick up where TikTok left off, add them to the same booth.
- Choose the booth. For TikTok most people want a daily budget: 20 or 30 free minutes, then the shield. Set it to zero and every minute costs a trip. Or close a window, 21:00 to 08:00, so the For You page is simply not there at night.
- Hide the key. Scan a spot in another room for a few seconds: a kitchen shelf, the hallway. That is now the only key. Away from home, the walk key opens the booth after 100 real steps.
- Pick the level. Strict is worth it for TikTok: the second pass in the same block costs more steps than the first, so a second ten minutes is a real decision. Easier changes wait 24 hours; stricter ones apply at once.
When the budget runs out, TikTok shows a shield with one button: Pay the toll. Walk to the spot, scan, ten minutes. Then the shield is back, and the next ten cost another trip. The feed is still infinite. Your access to it isn't.
What happens when you try to cheat
You will, within the first week. Here is what each exit costs, so there are no surprises:
- Pay the toll. Walk to your spot and scan it, or walk the steps. Ten minutes of TikTok, then the shield returns. Passes don't stack. On the Strict level, the second pass in the same block costs more steps.
- Change the clock, force-quit, delete Tollie. None of these work while a block runs.
- Open tiktok.com in Safari. Tollie blocks apps, not websites, on purpose. TikTok's website is a pale copy of the app, which is why the app block alone works for almost everyone. If you want it closed too, Apple's own tool does it: Settings, Screen Time, Content & Privacy Restrictions, Content Restrictions, Web Content, add tiktok.com under Never Allow.
- Break Glass. One tap opens everything for 30 minutes, once a week. If you named a witness, they get a note that you broke the glass.
- Switch Tollie off in Settings. Apple keeps this exit open for every blocker, Tollie included. Tollie counts it as a Break Glass and tells your witness.
One booth is free, forever. Put TikTok in it this afternoon. Tonight the key is in the kitchen.
Questions
How do I block TikTok without deleting it?
Put it behind a block. Screen Time's App Limit works until you tap Ignore Limit. Tollie shields the app the same way but the way back in is a walk to a spot in your home, so TikTok stays installed and stays shut.
Can I limit TikTok to 30 minutes a day?
Yes. A budget booth gives you 30 free minutes, then the shield. Every ten minutes after that costs a trip to your key.
Does deleting TikTok work?
For a day. The App Store is one tap away and your account is waiting. A block you can't undo from bed holds longer than a deletion you can undo in ten seconds.
What about Reels and Shorts?
Add Instagram and YouTube to the same booth, or give each its own. The budget is per booth.
Tollie is made by the people who wrote this page. TikTok and other product names belong to their owners and are used to describe them. Screen Time steps describe iOS 17 and iOS 18 as of 31 October 2026; Apple moves things between versions.
