How to stop scrolling in bed
Every piece of advice about phones in bed assumes you have willpower at 11pm. You don't. Nobody does. Here is a setup that doesn't need any.
Why the usual advice fails at 11pm
Charge it in another room. Buy an alarm clock. Set Downtime. Turn the screen grey. All of it works on the night you set it up, because that night you decided. The problem is every night after, when the phone is on the nightstand "just for the alarm" and the decision has to be made again, by the most tired version of you.
A rule that has to be re-decided every night is not a rule. It is a nightly negotiation, and 11pm you wins every time.

Get TollieThe fix: decide once, in the afternoon
What holds is a rule set by afternoon you that night you cannot undo. Tollie is built around exactly that.
- Pick the apps you open in bed. Usually social, video and one game.
- Close a window. A Bedtime booth closes those apps from 23:00 to 07:00, every night. The phone still works: alarm, Messages, Phone, Maps, Health.
- Hide the key in the kitchen. Scan a corner of the kitchen or the hallway. If you want ten minutes of Instagram at midnight, you get out of bed, walk to the kitchen and scan the spot. Ten minutes later the shield is back.
- Set it while rested. Making a rule easier waits 24 hours and only applies when the booth is open. Making it stricter is instant. So the only person who can loosen the rule is the one who set it, a day later.
Most nights you won't make the walk. That is the point. The walk is not a punishment, it is a pause long enough for the urge to pass.
The first night you want to cheat
It will happen within a week. Here is what each exit costs in Tollie, so you know in advance:
- Pay the toll. Walk to the kitchen and scan, or walk 100 steps around the flat. Ten minutes. On the Strict level, the second pass the same night costs more steps.
- Change the clock, force-quit, delete the app. None of these work during a block.
- Break Glass. One tap opens everything for 30 minutes, once a week. If you named a witness, they get a note that you broke the glass. Most people find that enough reason not to.
- Switch Tollie off in Settings. Apple keeps this exit open for every app. Tollie counts it as a Break Glass and tells your witness.
Seeing it work
Your week in Tollie shows each night as a dot: held, or not. "Night held" means the booth closed at 23:00 and nobody paid a toll before 07:00. Seven in a row feels better than any streak badge, because every one of them was a night you slept.
One bedtime booth is free, forever. Set it this afternoon. Tonight the key is in the kitchen.
Questions
My alarm is on my phone. Will it still ring?
Yes. Clock, Phone, Messages, FaceTime, Maps, Wallet, Camera, Health, Find My and Settings can never be blocked by Tollie, and emergency calls are never affected.
I read in bed on my phone. Can I keep that?
Yes. Only the apps you put in the Bedtime booth are closed. Leave your reading app out of it.
What if I'm staying somewhere else?
The walk key works anywhere: 100 to 2,000 real steps, your choice, counted by your phone.
Can I start softer?
Pick the Easy level: one short walk opens the booth until its window ends. You can move to Standard or Strict any time, and it applies at once.
