How to block Instagram on iPhone so it actually stays blocked

You have already tried the App Limit. You tapped Ignore Limit. Here are the three ways to block Instagram on an iPhone, ranked by what it costs to get back in, and the one that holds.

The short version

There are three ways to block Instagram on an iPhone. They all use the same Apple mechanism underneath. They differ in one thing: what it costs you to get back in at 11pm.

Option 1: Screen Time, the built-in way

Free, already on your phone, and worth knowing, because every other blocker builds on it.

  1. Open Settings, then Screen Time.
  2. Tap App Limits, then Add Limit.
  3. Choose Social, then tick Instagram (or the whole category). Tap Next.
  4. Set the daily time, switch on Block at End of Limit, tap Add.
  5. Optional: under Downtime, schedule hours when only the apps you allow are available.

Here is what happens when the limit hits. The screen says Time Limit, and under it, a button: Ignore Limit. One more minute, remind me in 15 minutes, ignore for today. If you set a Screen Time passcode, the button asks for the passcode first. You know the passcode. That is the whole problem, and our guide to why you keep ignoring Screen Time limits goes through it. The one trick that works for some people is having a partner set the passcode and not tell you.

Option 2: a blocker app

Opal, Freedom, AppBlock, one sec, ScreenZen and the rest all run on the same Screen Time framework, so they shield Instagram exactly the way Apple does. What they add is a different key: a PIN, a waiting period, a breathing exercise, a timer you commit to, a "strict mode" switch. Each is better than Ignore Limit. Each is still on the phone, in your hand, at 11pm. Our ranking of nine blockers sorts them by exactly that.

Option 3: put the key in another room

Tollie uses the same Apple shield as everything above. The difference is where the key lives. During setup you scan a spot in another room, and from then on a ten-minute pass to Instagram costs a walk to that spot. No passcode, no Ignore button, nothing to tap in bed. Setup takes about four minutes:

  1. Install Tollie and pick Instagram. Tap New toll booth and choose Instagram from the list of your apps. If Instagram is the gateway to the rest, add Social as a whole.
  2. Choose the booth. Close a window: Instagram shut from 21:00 to 08:00, or the whole workday. Or set a daily budget: 30 free minutes, then the shield. Set it to zero and every minute costs a trip.
  3. Hide the key. Walk to the kitchen, the hallway, the bathroom. Scan a shelf or a corner for a few seconds. That spot is now the only key. Not at home? The walk key opens the booth after 100 real steps.
  4. Pick the level. Standard is the default. Strict makes the second pass in the same evening cost more steps than the first. Any change that makes the rule easier waits 24 hours; anything stricter applies at once.

From then on, opening Instagram shows a shield with one button: Pay the toll. Walk to the spot, scan, ten minutes. Most evenings you won't make the walk, and that is the whole idea. The walk isn't a punishment, it is a pause long enough for the urge to pass.

What happens when you try to cheat

You will, within the first week. Here is what each exit costs, so there are no surprises:

One booth is free, forever. Put Instagram in it this afternoon. Tonight the key is in the kitchen.

Questions

Can I block Instagram but keep Messages and WhatsApp?

Yes. Only the apps you put in the booth are blocked. Phone, Messages, FaceTime, Maps, Camera, Wallet, Health, Find My and Settings can never be blocked, and emergency calls are never affected.

Can I block Instagram only at night?

Yes. A window booth closes Instagram between the hours you choose, 21:00 to 08:00 say, every day or only on the days you pick.

Can I block Reels but keep the rest of Instagram?

No app on iPhone can, because Apple's Screen Time framework shields whole apps. A daily budget of 20 or 30 minutes is the closest thing: enough for messages and a post, not enough for an evening of Reels.

Will my friends see anything?

No. Instagram doesn't know it is blocked. Only your witness, if you name one, hears anything, and only when you break the glass or make a rule easier.
